Pomona College, Lincoln and Edmunds Buildings

Claremont, California

Pomona College, established in 1887, is widely regarded as one of the premier liberal arts colleges in America. Pomona College is the founding member of the Claremont Colleges, a consortium of seven independent institutions of higher education. The design intent for the new Lincoln and Edmunds buildings was to create an efficient and flexible space that supports multiple user groups. The 48,600-SF South Building is a two-story structure with a partial basement housing geology, environmental analysis, and computer science disciplines. The 43,700-SF North Building has an “L” plan with the South Building that creates a courtyard.  The North Building is three stories with a partial basement, housing psychology, linguistics and cognitive science, neuroscience, and the intercollegiate department. Equally important to the flexibility and organization of the program was having the building’s exterior architectural vocabulary in complement with the integrity of Myron Hunt’s 1908 aesthetic. Originally designed to achieve Silver-level certification, the Lincoln & Edmunds buildings ultimately earned the first ever LEED Gold-level certification for Pomona College.
