DMJM performed the complete design for the 4,400–square foot Los Alamos National Laboratory High-Power Detonator Facility, which is used to produce explosive detonators. In accordance with the DOE explosives safety manual, the structure was designed to contain the effects of an accidental detonation of explosives. Blast load considerations included reflected shock waves associated with a detonation, and partially vented gas pressure loads. The structure was designed to allow inelastic structural response to the dynamic blast loads, contain potential fragments, and avoid collapse. The structural design effort included nonlinear, dynamic structural analyses; quantity-distance siting; and blast-resistant design of an adjacent day magazine.
